I told you last week in this blog, about a restaurant in Mumbai India called "Hitler's Cross" The owner of the restaurant used the name and images of Hitler and swastikas on the walls, in order to stand out among the hundreds of other restaurants in the area. It worked, but after meeting with representatives of Mumbai's small Jewish community, the owner agreed to change the name of the joint. As far as I know, a new name has yet to be chosen.

You have to laugh...
Mumbai, India - A new restaurant in India's financial hub, named after Adolf Hitler and promoted with posters showing the German leader and Nazi swastikas, has infuriated the country's small Jewish community.
Hitler's Cross, which opened last week, serves up a wide range of continental fare and owners say they chose the name to stand out among hundreds of Mumbai eateries.
India's remaining Jews (most migrated to Israel and the west over the years) are outraged by the gimmick.
NO SHIT!

I just saw the documentary, "NEW YORK DOLL the movie" It documents the somewhat tragic life of new york dolls' bass player Arthur "KILLER" Kane. I had heard a bit about the film before seeing it so there were few suprises but a great film none the less. I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it, but see it if you're a Dolls fan. Arthur basically lived in poverty since the late seventies. That's not so strange, there are many stories of ex rock stars falling on hard times. What struck me though, was a tiny detail in the story, Arthur's guitars were in a pawn shop for many years. He payed about $175 per year in monthly charges to keep them but it would have only cost about $260 to get them back. When you watch this documentary and see all the "rich" rock stars that talk about how important the Dolls were to them, you have to wonder why no one ever gave the guy $260 to get his guitars back. (his friends in the Mormon church helped him out), (the fucking Mormons) I'm sure the "rich rock stars" didn't know but that minor point just seems so tragic. I wish I had known, I would have sent him the money. It makes you think, I wonder if Teenage Head's drumer is ok, are his drums in hawk? How's the bass player from the Stooges doing? Is he in desperate need of a bus ticket or a rent payment? There should be a web site or something where ex rock stars in need can ask for help and fans can contribute in some way.

Stockwell day
this is stockwell day, canada's minister of public safety. mr. day believes in every word of the bible, he believes that the earth is 6000 years old and that man walked with the dinosaurs, (see Flintstones) this view may have nothing to do with his job as public safety minister but I still think it's funny (scarry) that he seems to believe carbon dating is some kind of witch craft. and what is a "public safety minister" anyway? mr. day was once the leader of the party but was trumped out by the party (kicking and screaming to an embarrassing degree) and once out he was given the position of foreign affairs critic but when the party took power he was given the made up job of public safety minister. I think the job may have something to do with the terrorist threat, because having a fundamentalist christian dealing with muslim extreamists is the kind of thinking I've come to expect from this government. but it might have something to do with crime. we already have a blunt witted minister of justice, (see below) but stockwell's views are a little more extreme. he believes that "gun control responsibilities are taking police officers off the streets and adding to crime" (actual quote) and on dealing with child molesters "put him in the general prison population. the moral prisoners will deal with him in a way we don't have the nerv to do" (actual quote) stock's gladiator justice is the type of thing we all say over a couple of beers with friends but not something we would seriously put into practice, or say publicly as an elected official. maybe it's the public's safety at home that he'll focus on but i don't think he has a firm grasp of the problem of domestic violence. "I want to know how many women in Alberta are physically battered and not just insulted by their husbands... If we talk insulted by their husbands, then I'm afraid that I'm guilty from time to time of abusing my wife." (actual quote) this is stock disputing the number of women reported to be abused in the home. this is stockwell day, canada's minister of public safety.

vic_toews_
this is canada's justice minister vic toews. he believes that children as young as 10 years old, who break the law, should be incarcerated. the current bar is set at 12 years old. vic believes, "BY THE TIME THEY"RE 12 THEY"RE ALREADY CRIMINALS" (actual quote) vic believes that a 10 year old who is charged with break and enter or drug dealing can be set straight with a little time behind bars. that's right, the thousands of dollars it takes to incarcerate that child will be well spent. we'll have a well ajusted upstanding citizen who knows less about crime than when he went in. I'm sorry vic, but I believe the money spent on incarceration would be better spent on social programs starting with support for young parents who don't have the money, education or family support to provide a stable home environment for the child. A national day care plan focusing on early development and education and community programs that give bored teens and pre teens, something to do. most kids will chose sports, art, music, etc.. over crime, if they're given the chance. vic's plan is to give no support, save that money for when they fuck up and then spend it on incarceration. this is canada's justice minister, vic toews.

castro in better days
in blah blah blah #23 mike and I talk a little about Quebec politics and Cuba (no connection there) On the subject of Quebec, our discussion may seem a little muddled but that's Quebec politics in a nut shell. write us (radiofreemontreal@mac.com) if you have any questions we'll try and make some sense of this nonsense. on the subject of Cuba, I like Castro, Mike doesn't.
church on st. catherine
in blah blah blah #22 mike and I talk about Lebanon and the middle east in general. I admit I went just a tad over the top with my call to bomb all religious institutions and kill all religious people. I know that we'd just find something else to fight about, but you have to admit, for a couple of weeks it would be a pretty nice world. "crazy mel gibson" had it wrong when he said "the jews are responsible for all the wars" we all know it's the christians, muslims, sikhs AND the jews that are responsible for all the wars.

13th floor elevators
this week on radio free montreal's weekly variety hour, we devote the entire show to the 13th floor elevators. our melbourne correspondent mentioned a film about the band's troubled singer (you're gonna miss me) and in his latest contribution, talks about seeing the band in melbourne. I decided to look into this band a little bit and found so many great songs that marcello and I just played nothing but 13th floor' for the whole show. I know we already devoted an entire show to psycadelic music just a few weeks ago but I think the 13th floor elevators are more than just a psycadelic band. their earliest stuff sounds more TROGS, THEM, SONICS and then there's that damned jug in nearly every song.

giant spider
Giant spider marches on nation's capital
Unhappy with the government's day care policy, a giant spider marched on Ottawa yesterday to voice her concern. "I'm about to have 73 children,"she said, " and the $7300.00 that the government gives me every month is no where near enough to cover the cost of day care, and even if it was, there are not enough day care spaces in my area".
The giant spider plans to scuttle around the capital hill area eating tourists and public servants until she's allowed to meet with the prime minister. "I may be a cold blooded monster", said the spider, "but I'm also a mother and Harper needs to hear my concerns and the concerns of mothers across the country".
Stephen Harper's office released a statement this afternoon saying simply, "The prime minister will not be bullied by special interest groups and unlike the giant spider, this government supports our troops.

point roberts as seen from crescent beach
this week on BLAH BLAH BLAH #21 I talk to my dad about lebanon, the race for the leadership of the alberta conservative party, the vancouver police chief, dad's citizenship (or lack there of), and partying in point roberts (no more).
