the other clinton

I think it's too soon to say but the conventional wisdom seems to be that the next democratic nomination is hillary's to loose. I think she may take it but I have my doubts about her ability to win the presidency. she'll win the red states, but so did gore and kerry. she needs a running mate who can break through the stale mate...

and here he is

with obama as vice president I think clinton can win two terms and with eight years as vice president, obama could no doubt walk into a couple of terms as president. for some reason no one is talking about this, why? it seems so obvious to me....oh ya I forgot , the democrats don't like to win.

family guy?

is anyone else starting to get a little uneasy with the "dog/women sex" jokes on the family guy? I think it was last season when peter disappeared and brian (the family dog) took over as the man of the house, he wanted to have sex with lois and the episode ends with her almost giving in when peter arrives home. Last night the episode featured brian taking meg to her prom and in a drunken moment, making out with her. meg develops an infatuation with brian and at one point she ties him up and strips down to her underwear, crawling on top of him before being interrupted. I liked the "king of comedy" reference but the whole idea that this teenage girl could develop a sexual interest in a dog, strikes me as a little disturbing. I've never been a big fan of the writing of the show, I feel it lacks the sophistication of king of the hill or the simpsons, (that's right, sophistication) but I have always liked the way they push the envelope, it just seems that the whole dog/woman sex thing smacks of misogyny at worst or extremely juvenile at best, or maybe a little of both. Like I said I've never been a huge fan of the show, I think it's over rated but it always makes me laugh, but now I'm not sure I can still watch it, I don't think I like the writers anymore. If you want to watch something well written that pushes the envelope in an effort to make intelligent social commentary, watch south park.

smug bastard

You have to give him credit for a smart political move. Gilles deceive announced that his party, THE BLOCK, is willing to bring down the minority Conservative government over their Afghanistan policy. The Block wants to limit Canada's involvement to it's current 2009 mandate and more importantly, refocus their efforts on reconstruction rather than the search and destroy activity they're now involved in. Of all the regions of Canada, Quebec is the most opposed to the military action in Afghanistan and since Gille's party only runs in Quebec, any opposition to the conflict would be a wise political move. You might think that forcing an election on an election weary public, would not win him any votes but I think that the unexpected popularity, in Quebec, of the new Liberal leader, makes Gilles think that it would be a good idea to take on the Liberals, (the Block's main political rivals) sooner rather than later. If this move doesn't force an election it will be because a good portion of Liberals side with the Conservatives on Afghanistan, quite likely hurting them in Quebec, not to mention Vancouver and Toronto. So it's a win, win situation for the Block.

One other thing to note. The NDP will vote with the Block on this, (that's almost a sure thing) and that may raise their profile in Quebec, something they desperately need. So Gilles' plan may, to a degree, back fire and let Quebecers know that there is another left wing party out there, something the rest of Canada has been aware of since at least 1963.
